Go Upstairs

You approach the staircase and step off of the hardwood floor and onto the carpeted steps.

It occurs to you that you are only wearing socks. You have, without even realizing it, instinctively taken your shoes off before stepping on the carpet. Perhaps you wonder if this is a new habit of yours, or perhaps you were raised that way. If you come back downstairs, you are sure you will just as instinctively put your shoes back on. You do not know what kinds of things may be on the floors of this home, and, regardless of the presence or absence of children, it is always possible that a stray Lego may lodge itself in the foot of any unlucky barefoot soul. It is unwise to take those kinds of chances.

As you make your way upwards, you take in what you assume is a gallery wall of photos of the family that seemingly lives here, or lived here. You can’t be sure of any kind of timeline, but you can tell that you are the only person in the home at the moment. Also, the lack of a front door makes it difficult for you to imagine how someone could possibly come into this house. Maybe you’ll come back to check those photos out.

On the first landing of the staircase is a single window. Would you like to check out the window?

You are on a switchback staircase, so to reach the second level, you end up walking in the same direction that would lead to the central area of the home.

As you reach the landing of the stairs, you see before you a hallway that splits off. Directly to the right of the staircase is a white door, and beside it, a door with rubber ducks painted on it. Directly ahead is a hallway leading to several rooms.
